Slovakia: end of regulated tenancy and support of rents
Slovakia will, presumably still this year, enable the landlords to terminate lease with people who pay regulated rent. Less solvent tenants should receive rental housing from municipalities, which will be provided with state subsidies in the coming years. It was proposed by Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development. Unlike in the Czech Republic, the regulated rent will not be completely abolished, Tenants will be able to stay in their existing homes until they have obtained public housing. The number of flats with regulated rent in Slovakia is estimated at several thousand. This is significantly fewer than in the Czech Republic where the regulated rent will remain at around 300,000 flats until the end of 2012. Due to regulated rent, nine owners of restituted houses took legal action against the Slovak government at the European Court of Human Rights. The Ministry of Construction pointed out that Poland previously lost a similar dispute at the Strasbourg court.
