The shopping centre Futurum in Hradec Králové will expand its retail space by 40 % to 35,000 sqm by May 2012. The investment, including construction of a new parking house, will amount to maximum of half a billion CZK. It was announced by Rostislav Novák, technical director of TK Development, at the official start of construction. Two more brand new shopping centres by other developers will be built in Hradec Králové.
Aupark by HB Reavis Group will be significant competition for the Futurum project; it should be built on the site of the former bus station U Koruny. According to their Internet presentation, the company would like to start construction of the complex with more than 24,000 sqm of leasable area this year. The value of investment is at about 1.8 billion. The shopping gallery will have almost 170 shops, the complex 1,300 parking spaces.
Another large shopping centre under preparation is by the German company ECE near the football stadium in Malšovice. The project is worth over three billion CZK, and it includes construction of a new city football stadium. ECE plans to have 130 shops in the commercial part of the centre. The city hall and ECE are now working on obtaining zoning decision.
Also IKEA wants to enter the battle for customers. For some time there has been talk of building a new store in Hradec Králové or Pardubice. Pardubice city hall recently stated that Ikea may start to build near Libišany in the Pardubice area.
The last large shopping centre so far in Hradec Králové (population one hundred thousand) was opened by the development company Amadeus Real in November 2009. Their Atrium with 41 shops cost half a billion crowns, it was built next to the department store Tesco in the site of the former market in the city centre.
