Nongovernmental organizations call on Košice’s Lord Mayor to meet

Košice’s nongovernmental organizations SOSNA, Club to Support Improvements in Košice and Friends of the Earth – SPZ are alarmed about the ongoing activities that jeopardize the city’s greenery and nature. In their letter to Lord Mayor František Knapík, they suggest to organize a joint round-table with the representatives of the local government, public administration and NGOs. However, the Lord Mayor supports a more efficient mode of communication – a series of working meetings on each topic individually. Each association involved would send not more than two representatives, the city would be represented by the City hall’s employees. The environmentalists request the meeting to take place sooner, before the city corporation votes on the cancellation of the environmental generally binding regulations – on establishing, maintaining and protecting greenery, on protecting wetlands in Košice and on the zoning system of ecological stability. They are also alarmed by the planned reconstruction of the city park, construction of a hotel in the Barca park, felling of greenery for the Aupark and a road at the Námestí Osloboditeľov Square and part of the Štúrova Street and the felling of the Borovicový háj (Pine Grove).
