The government supported the Košice project as ECOC

Yesterday the government approved a system of monetary support for the project of Košice, which the European Parliament and the European Council selected together with French Marseille as the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) in 2013. Overall support for the project represents 9.96 million Euro. The title competed 9 Slovakian towns: Banská Bystrica, Bratislava, Dolný Kubín, Košice, Martin, Nitra, Prešov, Trenčín and Trnava. Košice, Martin, Nitra and Prešov progressed to the final. Rivals of Marseille in the French national round were Lyon, Toulouse and Bordeaux.

The European Union launched the ECOC project in 2007. This year, the title belongs to Austrian Linz and the Lithuanian Vilnius. Next year, three ECOC are to be – German Essen, Hungarian Pécs and Turkish Istanbul. In 2011, the title of ECOC will belong to Finnish Turk and Estonian Tallinn, in 2012 it will be Slovenian Maribor and Portuguese Guimaraes and in 2013 Slovakian Košice and French Marseille.
